House Where Booth Was Refused Medical Care After Lincoln Assassination To Be Auctioned
The Cleydael home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and over 75,000 tourists have visited it while retracing John Wilkes Booth's escape. On October 7 the historic home will be auctioned by Motley's Auction & Realty Group.
KING GEORGE COUNTY, VA, October 04, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nine days after shooting President Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth sought medical attention at the Cleydael house, home to Dr. Richard Stewart. Suspicious of Booth, Stewart turned him away without treating the broken leg he had sustained while escaping the Ford Theater. Booth was soon after captured and killed by Federal forces. Recognized by historians as a vital tie to such a historic event, the Cleydael home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmark Register. While on a bus tour route retracing the assassin's steps, the home received over 75,000 visits from tourists. On Friday, October 7, 2011 at 3:00 p.m., the historic home and 12 acres surrounding it will be auctioned by Motley's Auction & Realty Group. The property will be open for a tour on October 4, 2011 at 2:15 p.m.
The two-store colonial was built in 1859 for Dr. Richard Steward and his family. The single-family home is just over 3,300 square feet and features three bedrooms and two bathrooms.Tall ceilings and a wrap around front porch add character to the home, while modern cooling and heating by forced air keep it comfortable.
Due to the historical importance, this home may qualify for rehab tax credits through the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the National Parks Service.

The property is located just 4.3 miles off US-301/James Madison Pkwy, one of the primary arteries in the County of King George and nearby City of Fredericksburg.
