PLANET Day of Service to Be Held on Earth Day, April 22, 2010
The annual PLANET Day of Service is a grassroots event that allows lawn and landscape professionals to organize volunteer projects to beautify the grounds of schools, parks, playgrounds, senior centers, shelters, and anywhere that people enjoy green spaces.

HERNDON, VA, April 07, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The nation's lawn and landscape association, the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET), announced that it will hold its second annual nationwide PLANET Day of Service on Earth Day, April 22, 2010. The Lead Sponsors for this year's event are Agrium Advanced Technologies; American Profit Recovery; JOHN DEERE; Lawns by Yorkshire, Inc.; and Shindaiwa.

The annual PLANET Day of Service is a grassroots event that allows lawn and landscape professionals to organize volunteer projects to beautify the grounds of schools, parks, playgrounds, senior centers, shelters, and anywhere that people enjoy green spaces.

"The concept behind the PLANET Day of Service is to allow members to organize projects that have the greatest impact in their own community and that at the same time are part of a nationwide movement to educate the public about the importance of caring for our green spaces," said PLANET President Bill Hildebolt, Ph.D., Landscape Industry Certified Manager & Technician.

During last year's inaugural event, PLANET members completed more than 280 projects in 43 states and in Canada, with nearly 2,000 volunteers donating more than $400,000 in time and services. This year, PLANET expects an even large number of volunteers to complete hundreds more projects and to continue its partnership with Project Evergreen's GreenCare for Troops, which provides lawn and landscape services to families who have a military member serving overseas.

A few of this year's projects include installing native plants in McClarren Park in Brentwood, California; designing and installing new vegetable planters at the Native American Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland, California; creating interactive garden/play areas at a daycare center for children with complex medical needs in Denver, Colorado; and replacing the irrigation system at the Smith-Gilbert Vegetable Garden in Kennesaw, Georgia. The vegetable garden provided more than 3,700 pounds of fresh vegetables for needy families in the Atlanta metropolitan area last year.

"By installing a new irrigation system, we can make the garden extremely efficient and productive so that the volunteer gardeners can increase the production of vegetables to give to needy families," said Chris Williams, president of the Georgia Green Industry Association Irrigation Division.
