National College Horticulture 'Games' To Be Held in Atlanta
Students from colleges and universities are currently preparing to compete in the nation's only collegiate horticulture "games" to be held in the Atlanta metro area at Chattahoochee Technical College, April 8-11, 2010.

HERNDON, VA, April 02, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Students from colleges and universities are currently preparing to compete in the nation's only collegiate horticulture "games" to be held in the Atlanta metro area at Chattahoochee Technical College, April 8-11, 2010.

Student Career Days (SCD) is an annual three-day event where students from universities and colleges across the country compete in events that are directly related to the skills necessary for a career in the green industry, including tree climbing, paver installation, wood construction, sales presentation, skid steer operation, and plant identification. The event, in its 34th year, is organized by the nation's lawn and landscape association, the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET).

"We have teams from small community colleges as well as large universities like Penn State, University of Maryland, and Michigan State," said Anna Walraven, director of Industry Development at PLANET. "This event lets students show off their skills to recruiters from top national companies like Davey Tree, BRICKMAN, and ValleyCrest and earn scholarship money."

Last year, 61 schools and 798 students competed at SCD. The top placing schools included Brigham Young University - Idaho, Colorado State University, Chattachoochee Technical College (formerly North Metro Technical College), Brigham Young University - Provo, Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly - Pomona, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, University of Georgia, and Penn State.

This year's major sponsors include STIHL Inc. at the Platinum level; Ariens/Gravely at the Gold level; Caterpillar and JOHN DEERE at the Silver level; and BRICKMAN, Husqvarna, Pavestone Company, and Ryan Turf Renovation Equipment at the Bronze level.
