Engineering Unplugged Conference Goes Green This St. Patrick's Day at ODU
NORFOLK, VA (February 10, 2009) — Engineering Unplugged, the premier and first-of-its-kind green conference in Hampton Roads, presented by the Professional Development Center (PDC) of Old Dominion University, is scheduled for Tuesday, March 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Ted Constant Convocation Center at Old Dominion University's Norfolk Campus.
Expected to draw more than 500 attendees, Engineering Unplugged is a state-wide effort to inform business and industry about green methodologies that provide a return on investment and sustain our environment.
"Going Green" is no longer a trend - it's real, it's now, it's the future. From mandates by President Obama, the focus and funding in the next four years will be toward green building, green manufacturing and green research. And that is exactly what the ODUProfessionalDevelopmentCenter's "Engineering Unplugged" green conference is all about.
Stephen Walz, Director of the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, states, "This conference is in direct alignment with Governor Kaine's yearlong initiative, Renew Virginia. We applaud the leadership of the PDC in organizing this important day and the generosity of its many sponsors in making it possible."
Designed to enlighten newcomers as well as engage those with an advanced understanding of green principles as applied to Building, Manufacturing and Research, the day offers a comprehensive curriculum of lectures from industry experts, tours, demonstrations, case studies and networking opportunities. Details at www.EngineeringUnplugged.com.
Clair Dorsey, director of the PDC, says, "Engineering Unplugged is structured around three educational tracks - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Energy Conservation and Future Initiatives. It will present information appealing to a variety of audiences: architects, engineers, designers, construction specialists, manufacturers, facility managers, military, researchers and other professionals."
Speakers include experts from The Green Building Council - the regulators of LEED Certification, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the US Department of Energy; the Hampton Roads Green Building Council; the Department of Environmental Quality; and professors from ODU and the University of Virginia.
Luncheon Guest Speaker: William A. Draves, internationally recognized author, consultant, and President of the Learning Resources Network. Draves is one of the most quoted experts on lifelong/online learning by the US media, including "The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, NBC and Wired.com.
Tours of two LEED Certified buildings will demonstrate real-world applications on how green practices can be used in new construction and in existing structures.
Dorsey reports that Engineering Unplugged will provide green building/ manufacturing/research professionals new tools to:
-Save money by auditing existing structures to improve the overall "envelope" for reducing potential waste through energy loss.
- Understand how going green will influence building, manufacturing and research in the future.
- Engineer for sustainability.
- Provide visionaries with information about green growth opportunities for their businesses.
- Prepare for changes in professional standards and building practices.
- And more.
Engineering Unplugged will supply half of the professional development hours needed to renew a Professional Engineering License in 2010, (8 CEUs earned). "We intend to create a conference environment where attendees can build a network of like-minded professionals to generate ideas on creating innovation that will be beneficial to the environment," says Dorsey.
