Recycle Outdated Electronics at Free Cox Event
Go Green to Save Green in 2009

HERNDON, VA, January 10, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Northern Virginia residents will be able to take another step toward reducing their carbon footprint on Saturday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cox Communications' electronic recycling event. The free event will be held at Cox's Northern Virginia headquarters located at 3080 Centreville Road in Herndon, Va.

The event, part of the company's Cox Conserves initiative, provides an opportunity for the public to recycle electronic devices in an environmentally responsible way. To ensure that all items are properly collected and safely processed, Cox is partnering with PC Recycler, Inc, a government approved recycling and data destruction contractor.

"As an industry leader, Cox is committed to proactively helping to reduce the local carbon footprint," said Peter West, vice president of information technology and operational development. "We're hosting this event to offer the public an environmentally responsible alternative for discarding outdated electronics."

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 82 percent of the 2.25 million tons of televisions, cell phones and computer products generated in the last two years ended up in landfills. Cox wants to help reduce that number.

"We're part of the Northern Virginia community so it's important that we do our part to protect the environment for our customers, employees and their families," noted West. "Whether it's through conservation efforts like incorporating hybrid fleet vehicles and implementing a network of Cox Conserves ambassadors to identify green opportunities, or by offering online, paperless bill options or hosting a free electronic recycling event, we're going green to help enhance the community."

Consumers who may have purchased or received electronic equipment over the holidays, including high-definition televisions in preparation for the upcoming digital transition, or have older equipment that they may not have known how to properly discard, will be able to take advantage of this special Cox event.

The Jan. 17 electronic recycling event is open to all residents in the D.C. metro area. Participants can remain in their cars while volunteers unload their outdated electronic devices. Residents attending the event are required to complete a computer recycling form, which will ensure an accurate account of the collected items for government agencies that track the quantity of recycled materials.

PC Recycler can process nearly any electronic item including: computers, laptops, cell phones, printers, CRT monitors, televisions, radios and stereos, DVD and VHS players, and more.
