New Interior Designers Find Math as Important as Magic
Watch most home makeover shows and you might come to the conclusion that the men and women with the paintbrushes and pattern books are closer to magicians than designers.
RICHMOND, VA, July 18, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Watch most home makeover shows and you might come to the conclusion that the men and women with the paintbrushes and pattern books are closer to magicians than designers. With just a wave of their arm - and some quick editing back at the television studio - a rundown home is instantly converted into a trendy lofty-style apartment, complete with hanging hammocks, perfectly placed wallpaper and decorated roof beams. It's an impression that's driving many people into the design industry and many others into Do-It-Yourself designers...only to find that a head for math, physics and geometry are at least as important as an eye for shape and color.
"Since shows like Extreme Home Makeover and Divine Design became popular, we've had a lot of people contact us for help finishing projects that they started and quickly realized they couldn't finish," explains Jessica Hornedo also known as "the Home Decor Physician", a Richmond Virginia interior design company. "Many of them had a pretty good eye for design but had trouble with the technical aspects, such as how to space three pictures evenly on a wall."
While makeover shows put the emphasis on the artistry of interior design, they skip over the dull bits: measuring the room, calculating the angles, figuring out how to make shelves fit a limited space - and making adjustments when they don't.
The truth is that to be a successful interior designer requires artistic talent but also demands at least the same amount of mathematical knowledge and the ability to judge weight and distance.
"There's a lot more to creating a beautiful living space than knowing your wallpaper from your weavings," explains Jessica. "You also have to know how to use a tape measure and how to calculate the bisector of a corner."
